Greenspon Advertising Wins 2007 ADDY Awards "Best in Show" Award.
Charlotte Observer

They shot, they scored!!! -  Like those TV commercials with the Charlotte Checkers' players at animals?

Greenspon Advertising won "Best of Show" at last week's local ADDY Awards for the campaign, in addition to 4 Gold ADDY Awards for the individual commercials. Greenspon's Patrick McLean picked up the hardware in front of a couple of hundred at a big to-do at CenterStage@NoDa. Corder Phillips (they have an A+ website) and Eventys were also big winners.

That’s what all the creative ADDY® Award types do every day. The upper echelon of the Charlotte Advertising community made an appearance at this year’s Awards Show and all were handsomely dressed and coiffed. Ya’ll clean up nice!

The 2007 ADDY® Awards Gala took place in Jeff Hurley’s basement in “G” town – nope, wrong party. The shindig happened at the very upscale CenterStage @ NoDa. It was like attending the Academy Awards without the swag. The glowing lights on the front of the building let you know you’d arrived and the music pouring out the front door put everyone in a festive mood. Event sponsors included National Cinemedia, Snap 5 Productions, the Charlotte Observer, and Mike Carroll Photography. TPM provided the wall of winners in addition to the brainchild cutouts at each seat.

Upon entering the affair I thought I’d accidentally crashed some wealthy couple’s wedding reception. Did Brangelina decide to tie the knot in Charlotte? No honey, this was the site of the 2007 ADDY® Awards Show and Gala. The Ad Club took this event over the top! So very posh. Mood lighting gave everyone a healthy glow. All the top shops were represented at the biggest awards night of the year.

The food stations overflowed with carnivorous treats, salads, fruits, vegetables and luscious desserts. A jazz trio played on while I went directly for the sugar-buzz, burying my head in cheesecake, 7 layer cookies, pecan pie and macadamia nut/white chocolate cookies. Just as I came up for air the presentation began. And what a production it was. Kudos to all the people who put this event together! It was fabulous.

Jim Considine noted that it was the “best Addy season in 8 years. The competition was fierce and grows every year. The talent here tonight is incredible.” Winners of the regional awards (NC, SC, VA) go on to Louisville, Jim’s hometown, for the next round of awards. There were 400 entries for the biggest and best ADDY® Awards show ever.

The presentation began with a song that said something like, “wouldn’t want to be inside your head.” And that was kind of weird since that’s what all the voices keep telling me. Snap 5 must have done some awesome negotiating because the Announcer voice sounded just like the guy from the Academy Awards.

The Excellence in Art Direction was rewarded to Corder Phillips Wilson's Greenwood Development piece, The Ponds. While the Excellence in Copywriting Recognition went to Enventys' The Swim Guy, Learn to Swim. Wray Ward Lassiter was the big winner of the evening with 7 golds and 20 silver awards. Luquire George Andrews brought home 2 golds and 8 silvers. While Enventys lassoed 3 golds and 4 silvers. Best of show went to Greenspon Advertising as it should have for those great Charlotte Checkers TV spots, Animals. Produced on a shoestring budget the ads did the miraculous — they were creative AND they worked! The Checkers broke three attendance records in 2006.

The YMCA TV ads “Yet Another Reason to Join” by 26 Inch Audio were great and got big laughs as well — and so did the charming Sopa Cabana singer courtesy of Luquire George Andrews.

When it comes right down to it, it feels good to be recognized for a job well done. So what has the body of a troll, is filled with all sorts of ideas, is gray, wrinkly and bloody all over? It’s your brainchild, of course! While it might not be the prettiest one in the class and yes, maybe it’s missing a few too many cells, it did win you that very cool award. Congratulations to all the winners and to all who provided the intense competition. And thanks to the Ad Club for such a great evening. Can’t wait ‘til next year.
